Climate change: Greenland ice sheet melting


Rain is becoming more frequent in Greenland and accelerating the melting of its ice, a new study has found.

Scientists say they're "surprised" to discover rain falling even during the long Arctic winter.

  • Greenland is the world's largest island and is larger than the following countries combined: France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Switzerland and Belgium
  • The closest country is Canada which is only 26 kilometers away
  • Greeland's southernmost point lies on the same latitude as Oslo in Norway
  • The majority of Greenland's population lives in towns.  48,000 inhabitants of Greenland live in its 16 towns and the other 8,500 inhabitants live in the country's 60 settlements.
  • Greenland's capital city is Nuuk, which is located in West Greenland.  Other major towns there are Sisimiut, Ilulissat and Qaqortoq.
